In light of memory theory, this paper scrutinizes how individual memories propel the narrator in Gilead to become involved in the narration of history, the reflection and rectification of collective memory and the identity-forming,thus revealing the thematic and artistic value of memory in interpreting the author's literary representation of history, religion and traditions. The individual memories of the narrator mend the rifts between generations, help the narrator reflect upon the amnesia and the latent suppression in the collective memory of Gilead, and remedy the core of collective memory, namely, the abolitionist and the religious tradition. Individual memories help the narrator re-contextualize the abolitionist tradition and reflect upon the changing collective identification it represents, which facilitates his identity-forming.Meanwhile,individual memories also enliven the narrator's religious identification and perceptions, giving incentive to the narrator in his identity-forming whereby the identity crisis that has obsessed him for years is resolved.
