Impacts of Compulsory Cultural Courses Concerning Relevant Areas and Countries on Students' Socio-cultural Competence

摘  要:随着跨文化交际的日益频繁,培养具有跨文化能力的英语专业人才成为时代对英语专业教育的要求。为了更好地实现英语专业的人才培养目标,我国某高校英语专业推出了内容与语言融合教学的全新课程体系,特别是区域国别文化系列必修课程体系。本研究采用定量与定性相结合的研究方法,通过对44名英语专业学生的问卷调查和99名英语专业学生的测试以及对12名学生的半结构化访谈采集数据,重点关注了区域国别文化必修课程教学对英语专业学生社会文化能力的影响。研究发现,区域国别文化必修课程对培养学生的社会文化能力产生了积极影响。其中,区域国别文化必修课程的教学丰富了学生的社会文化知识,提高了学生语言行为和非语言行为能力。此外,还发现区域国别文化必修课程教学在培养学生社会文化能力过程中存在教材内容、教学方法、考核方式方面的问题。针对这些问题,笔者尝试性地提出了一些应对措施。希望研究结果对我国高校英语专业的课程设置及课程教学具有启示意义。With the increasing intercultural communication, graduates with intercultural communication competence are expected in Chinese tertiary English teaching institutions. In order to improve English majors' intercultural communication competence, an English department of a university in China implemented an entirely new curriculum guided by the philosophy of content and language integrated instruction with a unique series of cultural courses concerning relevant areas and countries. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were adopted to investigate the impacts of the courses concerning relevant areas and countries on students ' socio-cultural competence. Data were collected through questionnaires, a socio-cultural test and semi-structured interviews.The study identified positive impacts of the courses on the development of students' socio-cultural competence: 1)They enriched students' socio-cultural knowledge;2)They enhanced students' verbal and non-verbal communication competence. It also discovered some problems in the teaching materials, teaching methods and assessment methods of the cultural courses. To solve these problems,the authors attempt to put forward some coping strategies. The findings could be enlightening to the curriculum design and English teaching for Chinese tertiary English teaching institutions.
