“科学与哲学的源泉”——《罐头厂街》的另一重意义

摘　　要：美国作家约翰·斯坦贝克的中篇小说《罐头厂街》出版后被评论界认为是"一块非常有毒的奶油蛋糕"。本文立足于新的时代语境,以小说的献词为切入点,阐述了斯坦贝克与其好友海洋生态学家爱德华·里基茨的精神联系;并透过生态科学和东方文明的双重视角,分析小说主人公多克的人物形象,指出小说不仅渗透着丰富的生态整体主义思想,也蕴含着《道德经》随遇而安的生存智慧。这一解读对于人类在人与人、人与自然关系日益紧张的现代社会里如何诗意栖居无疑具有积极的现实意义。The American writer John Steinbeck＇s novel Cannery Row was fiercely attacked by his contemporary critics as a ＂very poisoned cream-puff＂. Beginning with the novel＇s dedication, this article traces the spiritual relationship between John Steinbeck and his friend Edward Ricketts, a marine ecologist. From the dualist perspective of ecological science and oriental civilization, it analyzes the protagonist＇s holistic scientific thinking and his philosophy of life, which is to take things as they are as preached in Dao De Jing. The novel suggests human beings should live poetically in a modern society in which the relationship between man and nature has become increasingly strained.
