Objective To explore the influence of preserving the superior thoracic vein during the axillary lymph node dissection in breast cancer operations. Methods Retrospectively analysis the clinical data of 198 patients pathologically diagnosed with breast cancer who were underwent mastectomy and axillary lymph node dissection between August 2014 and May 2016 in Tumor Hospital of Yunnan Province. All patients were divided into two groups according to whether preserving the superior thoracic vein in breast cancer operations.Group 1 were preserved the superior thoracic vein and Group 2 were excised.Comparing and analyzing the postoperative drainage time between two groups by using Mann-Whitney U test. Results Among 198 patients,99 in group 1 and 99 in group 2.The drainage time varied from 5 days to 19 days in group 1 and 5 days to 49 days in group 2.The median of group 1 was 9 days, but 10 days of group 2.Mann-Whitney U test showed that postoperative drainage time presented a statistically significant difference in two groups(p=0.018〈0.05).The drainage time shortened in group 1 compared to group 2.Conclusion Preserving the superior thoracic vein in breast cancer operations may be beneficial to shorten postoperative drainage time.
