Objective: To observe clinical effects of ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) on walking ability of patients with cerebellar apoplexy. Methods: 38 patients with standing balance dysfunction after cerebellar stroke were divided into study group ( n =19) and control group ( n =19) according to the random number table method. The control group was given routine rehabilitation training, while the study group was given the AFO on the basis of the control group. The Berg balance scale (BBS) score, the 3-meter timed up and go test (TUGT) and the 10-meter maximum walking speed (MWS) were compared between the two groups before and after the treatment. Results: After the treatment, the scores of MWS and BBS in the two groups were higher than those before the treatment; the TUGT scores were lower than those before the treatment, and the differences were statistically significant ( P 〈0.05). The scores of MWS and BBS in the study group were higher than those in the control group, the TUGT score was lower than that in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant ( P 〈0.05). Conclusions: The AFO in the treatment of cerebellar apoplexy patients with standing balance dysfunction can improve the walking ability significantly.
