This paper uses the patent data and financial data of 568 Chinese main board listed companies in 2007 - 2010 to examine the influence of RD intensity on firms' ambidextrous innovation. It also checks the effect of institutional logic framework on the interpretation of the relationship between RD intensity and firms' ambidextrous innovation. Results of negative binomial regression indicate that RD intensity have positive effects on both exploratory innovation and exploitative innovation. Specially, the findings provide strong support for the premise that RD intensity has a stronger effect on exploitative innovation than on exploratory innovation. Because of institutional differences, state ownership has a negative moderating effect on the positive relationship between RD intensity and firms' ambidextrous innovation. Meanwhile, firm size has a positive moderating effect on the relationship between RD intensity and exploitative innovation, but a negative moderating effect on the relationship between RD intensity and exploratory innovation.
