In the second half of the 20th century, with the dramatic deterioration of the environment and the enhancement of ecological consciousness in American society, modern American pastoral elegies, which took the stage as a result, started to showcase significant changes in man's attitude towards the natural environment. The ecological consciousness undergirding these elegies denotes the phenomenological attitude of "back to the things themselves," which anticipated the birth of eco-phenomenology in the United States. To overcome the subject-object dichotomy is both the poetic pursuit of modern American pastoral elegies and the theoretical basis of eco-phenomenology. This article takes the perspective of eco-phenomenology to analyze the difference between American traditional and modern pastoral elegies, and to explore the latter's basic paradigms in constructing the world of life as well as its possible inspirations for modern subjects in face of ecological crises.
