摘　　要：本·甘特是美国作家托马斯·沃尔夫小说《天使望故乡》中的一个主要人物。本性格敏感具有哲学家的忧郁气质。他对家人充满关爱,尤其是对最小的弟弟尤金呵护备至。他志存高远,不愿碌碌一生,但其理想与志向不为家人和朋友所理解。他苦求人生意义而不得,在迷茫怅惘中郁郁而终。然而,本·甘特的探索精神却极大鼓舞了主人公尤金继续探求人生真谛的信念与决心。同时,作者通过对本的人物刻画与描写也深化了小说在迷茫中探索的主题思想。Ben Gant is one of characters in Look Homeward, Angel by an American writer, Thomas Wolfe. The character is sensitive, melancholy as well as considerate for his family members. He has been searching for the meaning of life in all his life.However, he has failed to get it and died in pain and misery eventually.Anyway, Ben’s inquiry has inspired the hero Eugene to explore the life meaning of human beings continually. Meanwhile, the theme of the search in the confusion is deepened and strengthened by the characterization of Ben Gant.
