摘　　要：艾米·沃特曼的处女作小说《屈服》讲述了一个围绕2003年美国"9·11"纪念馆设计大赛中标者的穆斯林名字而展开的激烈争论及其严重后果的故事。它并没有对事件及其后果进正面书写,而是聚焦各类受害者的个体感受及其与不同群体、社会机构之间的文化和情感冲突。通过对这些迥异态度和观点的全方位扫描,使我们看到故事主人公如何跨越个人创伤,以艺术的方式建构一种"纪念文化",并以一个含混的主题表现出强烈的社会责任感及历史使命感。Amy Waldman’s debut novel The Submission focuses on the fierce debate and its consequences surrounding the Muslim-sounding name of the successful bidder in the blinded competition for the9/11Memorial design in2003.Its depiction of the individualized feelings and agonies of all parties involved highlights the cultural tensions and emotional entanglements with an aim of building a“culture of commemoration.”By way of limning the various attitudes and views of both victims and the general public,she demonstrates how her protagonists transcend personal trauma and via artistic means construct a particular“culture of commemoration,”in the process of which she showcases her remarkable social responsibility and sense of historical mission via a poignantly ambiguous book title.
