In the dialogue, Plato has a complicated and contradictory view on poets’ subject status: in poetry creation, he believes that poets are only the megaphone of God and there is no subjective and active spirit as creators;in epistemology, he regards poets as the subject of creation and it is the ignorance of poets that leads to the fall of poetry. Plato’s view seems contradictory, but after careful examination, we found that this seemingly contradictory view puts higher demands on poets: he hopes that poets will restore their own subject status with own talents and inspiration to seek and spread the eternal “eidos” and guide the city-state citizens to “look up at the starlit sky”.
