约翰·斯坦贝克动物观的生态意义

摘　　要：生态批评自20世纪70年代产生以来,越来越成为人们关注的热点,其包括了生物中心主义和生态整体主义以及动物权利论等理论。诺贝尔文学奖获得者、美国现代作家约翰·斯坦贝克被称为“生态学先知”和“作为科学家的小说家”。作为生态整体主义之一的动物观,是对动物连意识都没有的理性主义的有力反驳,也是对长久统治西方思想的人类中心主义的有力反驳;动物不再只是人类的工具和手段,所有的生命个体都是平等的,都有生存权。动物也具有美学形象,有它们独特的存在美和价值,对动物的深切同情和动物平等的关注体现了斯坦贝克强烈的生态意识和环保意识。本文拟在新的语境中考察斯坦贝克的动物书写,借助生态批评理论重读斯坦贝克的长篇、中篇、短篇及非虚构类小说,挖掘其中众多动物意象的深刻含义,从而对其作品重新评价和定位,提升人类的生态责任意识,构建蕴含生态智慧的人与自然之间的和谐关系,推动关注生态的新人文主义思想的发展。Eco-criticism, since its birth in 1970s, has become increasingly a research hotspot including biocentrism, ecological holism and animal rights theory. John Steinbeck, the Nobel Prize laureate and the American modern writer, is also known as“ an ecological seer”and“a novelist as a scientist”. Animal rights theory refutes the thought that animals have no consciousness, which is the belief of rationalism and anthropocentrism which had governed the western world in the history. In fact, animals are not the tools and means of human beings, but the equal beings as humans, having the rights of existence. Animals, as other species on the earth, have their own aesthetical value. Steinbeck’s deep concern and awareness of living things reflect his strong consciousness of ecology and environmental protection. This paper is to make a research on some works of Steinbeck from ecological perspective in order to excavate the deep meaning of various animal images and re-valuate his works from a fresh angle so that people’s environmental awareness can be built up and the harmonious relationship between man and nature can be constructed to promote the new Humanism.
