In 1858, the London Missionary Society Press in Shanghai published a translation titled Zhiwuxue, which was compiled and translated by Alexander Williamson and Joseph Edkins, two British missionaries, and Li Shanlan, an exceptional scholar in the late Qing dynasty. As the first translated work on modern Western botany, this translation signified the spread of modern Western botany into China. Due to the time reason, Zhiwuxue did not have the obvious influence in the late Qing dynasty, while it deeply influenced the development of modern Japanese botany after its introduction to Japan. Then it had a profound impact on China as a result of learning from Japan. We brief discussed the edition and publication funds of Zhiwuxue, and elaborated its Influence in the late Qing dynasty and modern Japan.
