Raymond Carver's poetry is preoccupied with the human condition and the metapathographic fashion. Carver's narrative of "illness" is a weak appeal to social repression and life predicament, as well as physiological and psychological feedback when facing and bearing mental stress. As a valuable material for reading and interpretation, his poetry can effectively arouse the deep reflection of medical doctors and medical educators. The descriptions of the autopsy room, of patient-doctor relations, of hospice care and the chilling dismantling of personhood bring out the medical humanism in Carver's verse which contributes to re-establishing empathic bonds between doctors and patients, and to re-humanize the patient as a whole person in the context of contemporary health institutions.
