The term for "lion"in Tangut language is obviously a loanword,on which only the American German Berthold Laufer has made the etymological speculation. Nowadays, based on the Sino-Tibetan radical reconstruction, the Sino-Tibetan loanword research, the Sino-Tibetan and Altaic contacts, and the Eastern Asian and Indochinese common radical synonymic compounds, the term for "lion"in Tangut language can be re-considered to be the Proto-Sino-Tibetan term "tiger"borrowed from Proto-Mon-Khmer together with the first syllable of the Tibetan root "lion"borrowed from Sanskrit, which is roughly cognate to the Burmish terms for "lion"from the striking perspective of Southeastern Asian language group.
