Objective: To explore the diagnostic value and characteristics of nerve conduction in children with acute flabby paralysis (AFP). Methods: The functions of peripheral motor and sensory nerves conduction were examined in all 167 cases studied and the results of the observations were analyzed. Results: (1) The absence of écompound muscle action potential (CMAP) was observed in about 45.9% of the children with Guillain-Barr syndrome, significantly decreased amplitudes of it occurred in about 54.1% of them, and only delayed motor nerve conduction velocity (MCV) was achieved in about 29.7% of the cases; abnormal F waves accounted for in about ,89.2%. (2) The absence of CMAP the obviously reduced amplitudes of CMAPs and the delay of MCV accounted for 68.9%, 20% and 2.2%, respectively, in nerve of the injured-side caused by injections; (3) The slightly decreased amplitudes of CMAPs accounted for in approximately 27.9% of the patients with poliomyelitis syndrome in nerve of the lesion-side. (4) Although the normal MCV and SCV were found in children with myopathy or acute myelitis, both of the F waves of the later were abnormal. (5) The absence of the CMAPs of radial nerve were found in nearly 92.3% of the cases with fracture of humerus. Conclusion: It is able to determine the location and character of lesions by inspecting the peripheral nerve conduction function, and it's also helpful for differential diagnosis in children with AFP.
