The relationships between heaven and man, body and mind(heart),have always been a concern of Chinese and Western philosophy.Tea is often considered to be able to inherit the Tao of Heaven and daily-use,to nourish the mind inside and the body outside. This idea was carried out by Eisai, the“tea ancestor”in Japan, who combined the religious sacredness with the secular function of tea in his book Drinking Tea for Health. For Eisai, tea is an immortal medicine. The immortality comes from the magical source of tea and“medicine”points to the effective function of curing illness and maintaining health in reality. The immortality is the embodiment of the religious sacredness of tea, while medicine is mainly embodied through the various functions of tea.And drinking tea is the way to link heaven with man, body with mind.At the same time,it closely combines the religious holiness and secular function of tea.We should consider these two dimensions to examine the status and affect of Eisai in the history of tea in Japan.
