Both the African-American slave narrative and the Indian captivity narrative, as the literary forms produced in specific American historical periods, contain elements of "captivity-redemption". The Known World focuses on the various slaves’ life in the antebellum southern United States. Its rewriting of the "captivity – redemption" elements is embodied in the reconstructed experiences of Henry Townsend and Augustus Townsend under the liminal states and bivocal systems, as well as the spiritual redemption of John Skeffington and many black slaves. Through the multi-faceted settings of conflicts, the novel reveals the imprisonment and distortion of slavery imposed upon the body and spirit of both white and black people, which challenges the selective hegemony and singular values in the white "History".
