Objective To investigate the effect of tooth loss and oral hygiene status on quality of life among long-term cancer survivors in Shanghai. Methods A total of 5623 long-term cancer survivors were selected by cluster sampling from April to July 2013 in Shanghai,China.Data were collected using a self-reported questionnaire, which included questions about basic socio-demographic characteristics, cancer conditions and treatments, and oral health status(number of tooth loss, frequency of tooth brushing and dental visit).Quality of life was measured using the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General(FACT-G).Multiple linear regression models were performed to estimate the mean differences and 95%CI of quality of life scores. Results Of the long-term cancer survivors,17.5%reported more than 10 missing teeth,57.05%brushed tooth at least twice a day, only 7.7%lreported dental visit at least once a year. With the increase of the number of missing tooth, participants reported lower FACT-G dimension scores and total score(Ptrend<0.05).Participants with at least twice a day toothbrushing reported higher FACT-G total score than those with at most once a day toothbrushing.Participants with dental visit at least once a year reported higher social/family well-being,functional well-being and FACT-G total score than those with zero dental visit. Conclusion Number of tooth loss, frequency of toothbrushing and dental visit were associated with the overall quality of life among long-term cancer survivors in Shanghai.Oral health and scientific oral health behaviors may be helpful to improve the quality of life of cancer survivors.
