Objective To establish the combustion characteristics of typical self-made civilian explosives for the scientific disposal of explosion-related incidents. Methods The combustion tests of self-made civilian explosives with different oxidant mass fractions ignited with a fuse were carried out in open spaces and semi-closed conditions. The characteristics of redox reaction of such self-made civilian explosives were revealed. The different disaster forms were clarified under oxygen-poor and oxygen-rich conditions. Results No open flame of self-made civilian explosives was detected in the oxygen-poor state during whole combustion, and the disaster forms mainly included high-temperature toxic fumes.while a stable red flame was produced in the oxygen-rich state, and the damage forms mainly included high temperature burns. What’s more,a lot of jet mars were generated in semi-closed conditions. Conclusion The typical risk characteristics of self-made civilian explosives can be quickly determined by carrying out the combustion tests, which could provide the technical support for the comprehensive rectification of such explosion-related incidents.
