试论西南交通大学创建早期的英语教学本土化特点  

On the Characteristics of Localized English Teaching in the Early Establishment of Southwest Jiaotong University

摘　　要：西南交通大学是我国近代最早创建的专门从事铁路教育的高等学府。由于当时国内铁路教育尚未兴起,掌握专业技术的国内师资和相关中文书籍均十分匮乏,故而学校在其创建早期(即山海关北洋铁路官学堂至唐山路矿学堂时期)采用了英汉双语专业教学与英语技能教学相结合的教学模式,即在学习欧美国家铁路工程技术的基础上,结合国内教育的实际情况进行英语教学本土化探索与实践,表现为重视英语学习的实用性和工具性;聘请外籍专家执教,采用欧美专业教材,实施双语专业教学;坚持"中体西用"的办学原则,重视中文能力的培养;严谨治学,培养复合型人才等。Southwest Jiaotong university is the earliest institution of higher learning specialized in railway education in modern China.Because the domestic railway education had not yet started at that time,and the domestic teachers and relevant books were very scarce,the university had to adopt an unique English teaching mode(teaching of both professional English and English proficiency)in its early establishment(namely the period from Imperial Chinese Railway College to Tangshan Engineering and Mining College).On the basis of learning the railway engineering technology of European and American countries,it also explored and practiced the localization of English teaching according to the actual situation of domestic education.Through the study of the social situation and historical documents of the university,this paper analyzes the necessity of this measure,and summarizes its characteristics,which in details are emphasizing the practicability and instrumentality of English learning;implementing bilingual professional teaching by inviting foreign experts and using European and American professional teaching materials;focusing on the cultivation of Chinese ability through adhering to the principle of “Chinese essence and Western utility”;insisting on rigorous scholarship and training of compound talents as well.
