摘　　要：叶培忠(1899~1978),江苏江阴人,20世纪中国著名植物育种学家、农林学家和树木遗传育种学科创始人,中国植物研究和植物园建设、中国水土保持科学试验研究的开拓者和奠基人之一,中国最早从事牧草学科学研究和培养新中国首批牧草学研究生的指导教授之一,是中国最早提倡荒山林草结合造林的科学家。1927年毕业于金陵大学农学院,1930~1932年公派英国爱丁堡皇家植物园研修植物园规划、设计和管理,1933年任南京总理陵园纪念植物园(南京中山植物园前身)主任。1941年兼任中华林学会水土保持研究委员会委员。1943年3月,参加美国水土保持局副局长罗德民教授担任团长的西北水土保持考察团,独立承担保土植物考察和研究工作。随后,先后任天水农林部水土保持实验区技正兼营林股主任、实验区代主任和主任,1947年1月,叶培忠教授被民国政府农林部任命为农林专门委员。建国之初,叶培忠教授在武汉大学农学院任教期间,继续开展林草结合治理荒坡等水土保持科学研究,还被当时高教部指定为新中国首批牧草学研究生导师。我国著名草业科学家任继周院士称叶培忠教授为"中国林草结合第一人"。叶培忠教授在植物育种方面取得许多成就,其中以其名字命名的培忠杉耐水湿和盐碱,成为速生水土保持的优良树种。Ye Peizhong(1899~1978)was born in Jiangyin,Jiangsu Province,China.As one of the pioneers and founders in soil and water conservation,he is also a well-known scientist in plant breeder,agriculture and forestry,the founder of tree genetics and breeding in China.As a leading professor in pastoral science,he trained the first batch of pastoral graduate students in China.He advocated the combination of trees and grasses for planting in barren hills.In 1927,he graduated from College of Agricultural at Jinling University.During 1930 and 1932,he was sent to the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh,England to study the Design and Management of the Botanical Garden.In 1933,he served as the first dean of the Plant Research Department(predecessor of Zhongshan Botanical Garden)in the Nanjing Prime Minister’s Cemetery Memorial Park.In 1941,he became one of members of the Soil and Water Conservation Research Committee of the Chinese Forestry Society.In March 1943,he participated in the Northwest Soil and Water Conservation Investigation Group led by the deputy director of the US Department of Soil and Water Conservation,Mr.Luo Demin,and undertook independently the investigation work of soil conservation plants.Fom 1943 to 1947,he joined the Soil and Water Conservation Experimental Garden of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry,and successfully served as a top technician and the director of the operation department,acting director,and director of the Zone.In January 1947,he was appointed as the special member of Agriculture and Forestry Committee by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.In earlier 1950 s,as a professor at the College of Agriculture in Wuhan University,he continued to engage in scientific experiments on soil and water conservation,particular forest and grass management,and was designated as the first batch of postgraduate tutor in pasture by the Ministry of Higher Education.Professor Ren Ji-zhou,a famous grassland academician in China,praised him as"the first person in China’s forestry and grass combinati
