社会历史语境下的《红楼梦》亲属称谓语翻译风格研究——基于语料库的视角

摘　　要：该研究采用语料库的方法,基于《红楼梦》乔利译本,并以霍可思译本为参照,对《红楼梦》中英语料库中前五十六回出现的父系亲属称谓语及其英译进行研究,旨在探究译者乔利的翻译风格及其译本背后的社会历史因素。研究发现,产生于19世纪末的乔译本较之20世纪后期的霍译本,在对父系亲属称谓语的翻译上存在差异。乔译使用的古旧、正式词语较多,且严格忠实于原文。其译本作为19世纪帝国主义和殖民主义的产物,在翻译风格上体现了其所处时代的特点。文章将微观层面的文本分析、中观层面的译者风格与宏观层面的社会历史语境解读相结合,以期为翻译的综合研究提供一定借鉴。This paper is a descriptive study of Joly’s translation of Hong Lou Meng,with Hawkes’translation as a reference.Focusing on the analysis of paternal kinship terms and their translations,the paper conducts a statistical and quantitative study at the microlevel first and then discusses the translation style of Joly’s version,the differences between the two English versions,and the social and historical reasons behind Joly’s translation.The findings are as follows:First,there are differences in the translation of paternal kinship terms between Joly’s translation and Hawkes’translation.As far as the translation style is concerned,which are mainly in two aspects:(1)The choice of words.Joly tends to use archaic and formal words;while Hawkes’version is full of modern and colloquial vocabulary;(2)Translation method.Joly’s version emphasizes greatly"faithfulness"to the original text;while the Hawkes’is much more flexible,which appears more consistent with the western way of expression.The latter is the more obvious of the two differences.Second,social change in the target society and the characteristics and differences of the two versions are closely related.From the perspective of sociolinguistics,different vocabularies in translation reflect the change in British family relationships.From the perspective of descriptive translation studies,employment of a certain method in the process of translation has its social and historical background.Joly’s translation appeared at the end of the19 th century,when imperialist powers invaded China.The Qing government was defeated repeatedly in the wars,which led to the overall decline of national prestige.The Chinese cultural system encountered unprecedented challenges and crisis;while Britain was at its peak.The communication between China and Britain was mainly of the invasion and plunder of China by the British imperialists.Polysystem of English literature was strong and self-sufficient,and the English translation of Chinese literature can only be on the periph
