摘 要:部分学者认为奥古斯丁在《忏悔录》中对“修辞之恶”的攻讦隐含着对整个西方古典修辞学传统的否定。但通过分析《忏悔录》对维吉尔多处诗行的化用,以及奥古斯丁对表达风格(elocutio)、典型例证(exempla)、布局谋篇(dispositio)等古典修辞技法的重视,发现奥古斯丁在一个更高的视域中将修辞学这一世俗技艺纳入基督教神学的统摄之下,使其成为后者的施教工具:古罗马大诗人维吉尔的《埃涅阿斯纪》预言罗马这一“地上之城”的帝国使命;奥古斯丁自己的“最高之诗”则引领读者进入永恒常在的“上帝之城”。Some scholars argue that Augustine’s attack on"the evil of rhetoric"in his Confessions hints he held a negative attitude towards the whole classical rhetoric tradition.However,this thesis attempts to exhibit Augustine’s purpose of incorporating rhetoric,the secular art into Christian theology and making the latter a didactic instrument of the former,by means of emphasizing on such classical rhetoric skills,elocutio,and exempla,dispositio.Virgil,the great poet of ancient Rome,predicted the destiny of Rome as a world empire by his Aeneid,while Augustine led his readers into the eternal"City of God"by his own"Summus Poeta".
