The changes of location and of state are equally treated in the contemporary theories of semantic structure as ageneral principle of affectedness to judge the semantic role played by the direct object of a motion verb, where the latter is regarded as a special type of the former. Our study, however, shows that the two kinds of affectedness belong to different categories of geometric properties.Besides, the change of state affectedness based on topology invariants is represented first in the process of perceptual organization, while the change of location affectedness based on Euclidean geometry is represented later. In this sense, the state affec-tedness turns out to be more universal. Finally, the existing hypotheses in question are mainly based on the concept of gestalt shift, which has been criticized for being too intuitive.Based on the theory of topological perception proposed by Chen, this paper suggests that the topological invariants based on global connectivity provide a perceptual basis for the affectedness of state.
