从傅兰雅征文活动看晚清小说观念的碰撞与接受  

The Collision and Acceptance of Novel Ideas in the Late Qing Dynasty from the Perspective of John Fryer’s Essay Soliciting Activities

摘　　要：1895年由英国传教士傅兰雅举办的“时新小说”征文活动,是晚清时期举办的一次规模较大的小说征文活动。两则《求著时新小说启》和两则《时新小说出案》的内容差异,表明了傅兰雅矛盾、犹豫的态度。傅兰雅理想小说的界定具有中西文化结合的表征。朱正初的《新趣小说》作为唯一一部获奖并出版的小说,以揭露鸦片、缠足、科举考试的危害为主题,仍旧采用章回体的小说体例,体现出晚清时期小说观念处于由传统向新小说过渡的阶段。“时新小说”征文活动启发了晚清文人对小说创作的探索,傅兰雅将小说作为针砭时弊的工具这一观点,虽然具有一定的局限性,但是对晚清的文学变革产生了一定影响。In 1895,British missionary John Fryer launched a campaign of"New Age Novels"Contest,which was a large-scale essay solicitation in the late Qing dynasty.The differences in the contents of the two issued essay notices"seeking for new age novels"and another two notices"new age novels"show the contradictory and hesitating attitude of John Fryer.The definition of John Fryer’s ideal novel is characterized by the combination of Chinese and western cultures.The novel New Interest by Zhu Zhengchu,as the only novel that won awards and was published,was still written in the novel style of"chapter and form"with the theme of exposing the harm of opium,foot binding and imperial examinations,which reflects that the concept of novels in the late Qing dynasty was in the transition from traditional to new novels.The essay soliciting activity of"Novels of the Times"inspired the literati to explore the novel creation in the late Qing dynasty.There were some limitations in John Fryer’s view that the novel is a tool to criticize the current situation,but it had a certain influence on the literary reform in the late Qing dynasty.
