摘　　要：美国汉学家海陶玮的主要研究领域是中国古典文学,关涉中国戏剧的研究。他对中国古代戏剧史论进行了梳理,在《中国文学论题》中简要论述了中国戏剧的历史演变和发展历程,并从世界文学的角度观照中国戏剧的海外学术影响;高度评价了中国古典戏剧名著《西厢记》,并翻译了《西厢记》的故事起源——唐代传奇小说《莺莺传》;与中国话剧作家老舍也有一定的交往。The research focus of American Sinologist James Robert Hightower lies in Chinese classical literature,which also involves the study of Chinese drama.He sorted the historical theories of ancient Chinese drama by briefly describing the historical evolution and development of Chinese drama in Topics in Chinese Literature,whereby he highlighted the overseas academic influence of Chinese drama from the perspective of world literature.In practice,he gave rave reviews on the famous Chinese classical drama West Chamber,and translated its source text—aTang LegendThe Story of Yingying.He was also in contact with the Chinese dramatist Lao She.
