Jane Eyre and Adele are two orphans in Charlotte Brontё’s novel who are children without parental love but still able to correct the shortcomings in their respective personalities. For Jane Eyre, a passionate and impulsive girl, the process of curbing her passions and growing self-restraint is filled with painful experiences including violent conflicts with Mrs. Reed and humiliation from Headmaster Mr. Brockhurst. Jane Eyre finally and fortunately manages to become a self-restrained independent woman under the guidance and protection of her friend Helen and her teacher Miss Temple. For Adele, a girl who is considered to be somewhat self-indulgent and obsessed with matters of dress, the road from an orphan girl to a pleasing and well-principled woman is full of tolerance and love. Their different growth patterns are typical respectively for the lower class orphan and the upper class orphan.
