摘　　要：严复认为“辩/辨学”“论理学”和“名理探”作为logic的译名皆不当,并选择“名学”一词翻译logic。“名学”一词并非严复所创,但严复首次使用“名学”来指称logic。择“名”,因“名”之奥衍精博。择“学”,因“学”之深广。精博与深广体现在当“名学”作为logic的译名时,具有“治平之基”“专科之学”和“为学为术”的政治、知识和学术的三重内涵。Yanfu chose Mingxue名学instead of Bianxue辩/辨学,Lunlixue论理学and Minglitan名理探to translate logic.Mingxue was not created by Yanfu,but he was the first man to use it to translate logic.The reason that Yanfu prefered Mingxue is that Mingxue has three connotations of politics,knowledge,science and art.In connotations of politics,knowledge,science and art,Mingxue can be the foundation of national governance,the study of a certain subject,science and art respectively.
