朱利安·贝尔在华文学教育实践探析

摘  要:20世纪30年代,布鲁姆斯伯里团体的第二代诗人朱利安·贝尔曾在武汉大学外文系任教,当前学界对他文学教育实践的研究较少。通过对贝尔的日记、书信以及武汉大学校史等文献的梳理,归纳出他在华文学教育实践的三大内容:建立起良好的师生关系,培养有文学潜力的学生从事文学创作;指导学生阅读具有理性色彩的作品以提高他们的文学欣赏品位;率先在武汉大学开设了近代文学选读课程,促进了英国现代文学在中国的传播。虽然朱利安·贝尔任教的时间短暂,但其文学教育实践及思想促进了中英文学交流,为当前高校外籍教师的教学实践提供了一定启示。Julian Bell,the poet of the second generation of Bloomsbury became a teacher in English Department of Wuhan University during the 1930s,however,the history of his literature education has been received little attention.Therefore,by examining Bell’s diaries,letters and archives of Wuhan University,his teaching experience in literature education in China is explored from the following three perspectives:establishing a friendly teacher-student relationship whereby he cultivated the student with potential talent for literature creation;guiding students to read rational books to promote their tastes of literature as well as opening a new course of Modern literature to spread English modern literature to China.Short as his teaching experience in Wuhan University was,his contribution in communication between Chinese literature and British literature should not be forgotten,and his cross-cultural teaching also offers some implications for foreign teachers teaching in current Chinese higher education.
