摘　　要：作为美国南方著名女性作家,尤多拉·韦尔蒂擅长描摹美国南方小镇普通人们琐碎的日常生活,其作品呈现出强烈的地域意识。韦尔蒂的长篇小说《乐观者的女儿》呈现的南方小镇居民具有强烈的共同体意识,他们共享着南方传统思想和价值观。然而这种基于共同价值观的共同体追求同一性,压制差异性,排斥异质性,表现出封闭、保守和盲目排外的倾向。出生于穷白人家庭、自私自利的个人主义者菲伊,作为外来者和他者遭受了小镇共同体的一致排斥和抵制。小说中的女主角劳蕾尔作为共同体中的个体既反对菲伊所代表的极度个人主义的价值观,也没有选择完全认同共同体的价值观,而是选择了流动的个体身份,实现了个体的自由和独立。As a famous female writer in the south of the United States, Eudora Welty was good at describing the trivial daily life of ordinary people in small towns in the South of the United States. In Welty’s novel The optimist’s Daughter, the southern town residents have a strong sense of community, and they share the traditional ideas and values of the South.However, this kind of community based on common values pursues identity, suppresses difference and repels heterogeneity, showing the tendency of closeness, conservatism and blind exclusion. Born in a poor white family, the selfish individualist, Faye, as an outsider and the other, has been rejected and resisted by the small town community. As an individual in the community, Laurel, the heroine in the novel, neither opposes the extreme individualistic values represented by Faye nor fully agrees with the values of the community. Instead, she chooses the mobile individual identity and realizes the individual freedom and independence.
