In order to reduce the expressway accidents, the effective sight distance of expressways was studied. Based on BIM and reliability throry, influences of road linear combination, mountain, slope, medial divider, traffic facilities and vegetation on available sight distance(ASD) are considered respectively. Many working condition model were established by BIM to determine ASD. The distance and failure probability are key basis of describing the sight distance assessment. The research results show that the dangerous sections of sight distance failure are on the convex longitudinal slope sections and convex flat sections in uphill driving, right inclined flat curve road section or curved slope combination section in outside lane driving, left inclined curved slope combination section in inside line driving, right inclined concave curved slope combination section in outside lane downhill driving. The road sections mentioned above should be considered in highway design to avoid serious sight distance failures.
