摘 要:英国维多利亚时期作家乔治·艾略特因未能在其名作《米德尔马契》中突破女性传统的社会角色而饱受保守之谪,这其实有失公允。作者不可能为逞一时口舌之快而牺牲情节可信度。具有形而上追求的多萝茜娅最后固然回归相夫教子的传统角色,但小说通过高远的理想与卑琐的现实之间一心救世济困的女子和胸无大志的丈夫之间的巨大落差,制造出强烈的失望感与受挫感。在一个问题丛生、渐趋怀疑的时代,这种负面读者感受是一种现成的社会批评能量。George Eliot has been subject to the charge of conservativism for her heroine’s traditional role in Middlemarch.But such complaints are not justified as the author could not afford to ignore reality or the principles of realism which she ceaselessly championed.Despite its conventional ending,the novel generates,through the huge gap between the metaphysical ideals of the heroine and the restrictiveness of reality,especially the unexceptional husbands,a strong sense of frustration and disappointment on the part of reader,which would,at a time of mounting problems and growing skepticism,be transformed into a critical perspective on the Victorian society of that time.
