In research on cross-linguistic influence,“effects of the Second Language(L2)on the first(L1)”has become a new research focus. In this study, the visual world paradigm was adopted to investigate L2 phonological activation of 32 Chinese EFL learners during L1 auditory word recognition with the goal of examining the effects of the L2 on the L1 from a phonological perspective. The results were as follows:1)In terms of time course, the L2 influence on the L1 phonological processing began at the middle stage but ended at the late stage;2)In terms of spatial locus, this kind of influence was regulated by L2 proficiency. To be specific, for Chinese EFL learners with low-level L2 proficiency,L2 influence occurred at the lexical level;while for those learners with high-level L2 proficiency,it occurred at both the lexical and the sublexical level.Based on the BIA+model,an R-BIA+model is established in this paper to explain the theoretical mechanism of the cross-linguistic influence, which could be used in the auditory word recognition of the Chinese EFL learners.
