Richard Hoggart is one of the important founders of the Birmingham school. In the book The Use of Literacy, he uses an "ethnographic" method to examine and affirm the cultural life of the British working class before the World War II. The prewar mass cultural environment is the soil for the working class to continuously generate their original class consciousness, and also the living space for them to resist capital alienation. In the textual rumination of daily experience, the prewar working class continued to derive their unique cultural identity. The social consciousness and social unconsciousness in the life experience of the older generations are the historical starting point of the continuity of the development of mass culture. In contrast, the cultural industry, which was invaded after the World War I, intended to conceal the working class′ s perception of life experience and tried to construct a flat society lacking practical significance to dominate the masses. But the public is not willing to indulge in the indoctrinated culture.Through gardening, breeding, sports and other interests, the public is also trying to reconstruct a cultural atmosphere with practical connotation.
