信、证、释:中国上古帝王形象在近代西方公众传播的历史演进

摘　　要：中国上古帝王在近代西方一直是开放性的话题,然有关于此的既往研究尚存在时间上重“两端”而轻“中段”,资料上详书籍而略报刊的不足。论文在全面梳理西方出版物所见中国上古帝王议题的基础上,指出其公众传播肇始于16世纪末西班牙修士的“出使报告”,该报告发“信古”之先声,使中国上古帝王成为冲击圣经编年的重大议题;17-18世纪,中国上古帝王在耶稣会士的“证古”“护教之书”的进一步阐发,遂使亚当夏娃“遭遇”伏羲神农,并在教廷内外引发轩然大波,其可信又留疑的雏形由此生成;19世纪,新教传教士在报刊的公共舆论空间就中国上古史议题展开讨论,表现为信疑兼具、描述与考证相结合的释古面相。这种演进的历史轨迹是我们厘清西人眼里之中国形象的根源和依据,正可视作寻找中华文化国际传播的“入口”所在。Ancient Chinese emperors have always been the subject of an open-ended discussion in the modern West.Existing research focus too much on the“ends”and notenoughonthe“middle”intermsof time.Research material is rich in booksand scarce in periodicals Basedonacomprehensive reviewof topics related to ancient Chinese emperors in Western publications,this article points outthat the public dissemination of these topics began with a Spanish friar's“report of an envoy”at the end of the16th century.This report heralded the belief of the ancients,making China's ancient emperors a major issue affecting the biblical chronicle In the 17th and 18th centuries,the ancient Chinese emperors were further elucidated in the Jesuits'“proof for the ancients”and apologetics,which caused Adam and Eve to“encounter”Fuxiand Shennong and initiated a mighty uproar inside and outside the Holy See.Inthe 19th century,Protestant missionaries discussed issues of ancient Chinese history in public opinion spaces such as periodicals.When interpreting ancient Chinese history,some missionaries believed,others doubted,some mainly described and some focused on textual research.The historical trajectory of this evolution is the source and basis for clarifying the imageof China inthe eyes of Westerners,and itcan be regarded as the“entrance”to the international dissemination of Chinese culture.
