In the 1930 s,under Japanese colonial authorities,bird’s-eye view maps of Taiwan were created in large numbers. These maps featured not only the practicality of maps but also high appreciation value. They were produced in large quantities and circulated in various forms in the market, popular among readers. They not only presented the latest knowledge of Taiwan’s geography, but also displayed the island’s resources and dependency development, demonstrating the colonial authorities’ability to rule the island in a“bird’s-eye view”style. In terms of composition, the bird’s-eye view maps always placed government offices, shrines and other“inland”elements at the center, portrayed in detail and enlarged. In the planning of tourist routes,in addition to highlighting natural scenic spots, various“empire”symbols were embedded, making tourism a naturalization process for learning the spirit of imperialism.Cultural colonization activities represented by the bird’s-eye view maps are very worthy of attention as a part of the fifty-year history of Taiwan’s colonial rule.
