摘　　要：沃尔特·司各特的历史小说《古董家》通过书写不同阶层的葬礼仪式展示了18世纪末、19世纪初对法国入侵的危机想象,以及对苏格兰社会转型过程中如何处理过去与现在关系的思考。以贵族及其维护者为代表的旧式人物活在过去的荣誉观念中,难以与现在和解,或凄然死去,或暴卒,反映出旧共同体的割裂与解体;而以普通劳动者和中产阶级为代表的新式人物在面对死亡时则以情感宣泄的方式与过去告别,并在情感的交流中实现新共同体的建立。在司各特看来,以贵族为代表的上层阶级应在从传统社会到现代社会的转型时期处理好与过去之间的关系,承担新的社会管理/治理责任,以建构一个阶级有序的有机共同体。这既是司各特对现代社会结构的想象,也是对法国大革命的一种回应。Walter Scott’s historical novel The Antiquary imagines the crisis caused by the possible French invasion at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century by presenting the funeral ceremonies of different people, and the prediction of how to deal with the relationship between the past and the present in the process of social transformation in Scotland. The conservative people represented by nobles and their defenders lived in the honor of the past, and were difficult to reconcile with the present, thus they died sadly, or suddenly, which reflected the separation and disintegration of the old community;while confronted with death, the progressive people represented by ordinary workers and the middle class bided farewell to the past in the way of emotional catharsis, and realized the establishment of a new community in this emotional communication. In Scott’s view, in the transition period from traditional society to modern society,the nobility should deal with the relationship with the past properly and undertake new social governance responsibilities in order to build an ordered organic community, which is not only Scott’s imagination of the modern social structure, but also a response to the French Revolution.
