85%。“The tree tenant pays its rent with oxygen, through its dust-absorbing capacity,as an anti-noise machine……by eliminating toxins, purifying polluted rainwater,as a producer of happiness and health,a butterfly-bringer,and through beauty,”wrote Friedensreich Hundertwasser in 1973.His idea that houses could be habitats for trees and other plants is more relevant today than ever. There are good reasons:green buildings can reduce rainwater runoff from the roof by 60%-80%,lower ambient tem-peratures by 1.3-1.4℃,reduce noise by 10 dB,and reduce cooling energy consumption by up to 85%.One of the most zealous custodians of Hundertwasser's legacy today is the Milanese architect Stefano Boeri. In an in-depth interview in this issue,he speaks about his"vertical forests"and why he sees them as just one ele-ment in a diverse network of green spaces needed to support biodiversity.
