The sound structure of the poetic text is inseparable from its textual meaning, and the musicality of sound is an important feature of African-American poetry. The sound poetics of African American poetry originate from the conscious practices of African-American poets in artistic and social-cultural dimensions.Alice Walker′s poetry is featured by narrative of blues music as an important method to depict African-American experience and express their appeal. In light of poetics of sound, this paper interprets the narrative features of blues in Walker′s poetry Horses Make a Landscape Look More Beautiful. It argues for the following points:firstly, the repetitions of words, sentences and paragraphs in Walker′s poetry are consistent with the characteristics of blues music, which not only highlights the sound structure of the textual content of the poem, but also fixes the affective keynotes, such as sadness, melancholy and wrath expressed in the blues music.Secondly, the call-and-response and improvisation in poetry makes the sound meaning of poetry more conspicuous than its literal meaning. As the internal structure and main component of poetry, sound not only demonstrates the sound poetics of Walker′s poetry, but also agrees with the narrative characteristics of blues music. Finally, the combination of holler and African-American oral language/dialect also embodies the narrative characteristics of the blues.By employing unique sound forms,Walker endows her poems with textualization of the sound, which serves to present the cultural experience of African American poets and express their psychological affects.Cross-media research has currently become a hot academic topic. In this context, interpreting Walker′s poetry from the perspective of sound poetics can provide an important research perspective for the study on Walker as well as the study on poetry.
