The term Peng Lei(蓬累)first appeared in The Biography of Lao Tze and Han Fei in Historical Records, but it has never been seen in other documents contemporaneous with the Historical Records. Therefore, there should be other written forms of Peng Lei(蓬累).Peng Lei(蓬累)should be referred to as Fu Luo(蚹蠃),which is also called snail at present.First of all,the ancient pronunciation of the two is similar, and there is the possibility of different written forms of the same word;secondly, the characteristic of crawling inside the hidden shell of Fu Luo(蚹蠃)is in line with the meaning of hidden expressed by Walk like Peng Lei;last but not the least,in modern Chinese dialects, snail has a common name Pengluo(蓬螺).Walk like Peng Lei(蓬累而行)is a metaphor for a gentleman who was born out of time and had to hide and crawl like a snail, both hiding his body and his wisdom.
