The development of the historiography of American higher education is closely related to that of American historiography. During the colonial period, the Puritan historians made sporadic record of North American higher education in their works. The systematic study of American higher educational history began in the 1830s. During this period, related works were not written by professional historians, but organized and compiled by teachers, leaders or graduates of colleges, with a strong utilitarian purpose to praise the history and tradition of colleges. In the 1870s, a group of historians began to use scientific methods to study the history of American colleges and universities, and the historiography of American higher education began to professionalize. From the beginning of the 20th century to the Second World War, under the influence of progressive historiography, historians of higher education believed that the development of American higher education was a process of gradual progress in conflict and confrontation.
