对比分析霍克斯与杨宪益对《红楼梦》章回目中的人名翻译

摘　　要：《红楼梦》虽人物众多,但都特征鲜明,单单是姓名也暗藏玄机,比如从甄士隐取自“君子之道费而隐”,史湘云取自“湘江水逝楚云飞”。中国读者揣测起来津津有味,乐此不疲。但对译者来说,这却成为一大难事。首先,人名中承载的文化因素很难完全译出,稍有不慎,就容易译成四不像。其次,中西文化背景不同,就算译者将其含义完全译出,西方读者也不一定能够理解。目前,国内《红楼梦》译本的质量参差不齐,霍克斯与杨宪益对《红楼梦》的翻译是最成功的译本,也是国内外认可程度最高的译本,因此以此二人的译本为例,对《红楼梦》中的人名翻译进行对比分析,又因篇幅有限,所以仅选取其章回目中的人名,希望能够给译者以启迪,让人名的翻译更上一层楼。Although there are many characters in the Story of the Stone, all of them have different features. The name alone has rich content, such as “Zhen Shiyin” comes from “the way which the superior man pursues, reaches wide and far, and yet is secret”, and “Shi Xiangyun” comes from “The River Xiang runs dry, the clouds over Chu have flown”, etc. For Chinese reader, they enjoy the process of guessing and tasting the real meaning of personal names, but for translator, names with rich connotations become a problem. Firstly, the cultural factors in the name of a person are difficult to fully translate, because it is easily to be translated into others, whose contents is different from the source language. Secondly, due to the different cultural backgrounds of China and the West, even if the translator has completely translated the meaning of personnel name, the western readers may not understand it. Currently, there are many versions of the translation of the Story of the Stone in China. However, among them, Hawkes and Yang Xianyi’s translation is the most successful translation. Therefore, their translation is taken to as an example to compare and analyze the personnel names in Chapter titles of The Story of the Stone, hoping to enlighten the translator and make the translation of names to a higher level.
