In the mid-19th century, The Illustrated London News represented Ye Mingchen as “obstinate”, “bloodthirsty” and “calm”. Ye’s image was constructed by the combination of inter-textuality and inter-pictoriality, which was reflected in the echo and resonance of the voice of The Times and political context, the regeneration of meaning realized by inner-textuality, and the possible meanings generated by the interaction between Ye’s portrait on The Illustrated London News and his other portraits. Ye’s image was shaped by “Britishness”: it was driven by British commercial interests in the mid-Victorian era, carrying the mission of defending the honour and dignity of the empire, and also preaching the superiority of the British nation. Ye’s image is also of great significance to the study of images of the Chinese in western news texts.
