Since the 1990s, the historical memory of the Jewish exile in Shanghai during the Second World War started to be represented through the filmic medium. The early documentaries, represented by the American film Shanghai Ghetto, were almost entirely narrated from the Jewish perspective. This perpetuates the narrative framework of Jewish diaspora under the collective memory of the Nazi Holocaust and presents the historical memory within the cultural border of Jewish community. In recent years, documentaries on the subject of Jewish exile in Shanghai introduce a Chinese narrative perspective, highlighting the story of Jewish and Chinese co-existence in attempt to cross the communal cultural boundary of collective memory. However, such narratives often ignore the psychological complexity of the Jewish refugees under the context of European colonial culture and exaggerates the benign friendship between Chinese and Jews, propelling the myth of “Sino-Jewish coexistence” on screen.
