On Image-Text Relations in the English Translation of Traditional Chinese Architectural Terminology

摘　　要：本文以中国古建筑学者梁思成英文版著作《图像中国建筑史》为考察对象,运用Martinec和Salway的图文关系系统论,对中国古建筑文化术语英译中的图文关系进行研究。结果发现:中国古建筑文化术语英译中的图文地位表现为图文独立、图文互补、图附于文和文附于图四种关系;同时图文之间还存在详述、延伸和增强三种逻辑语义关系。本文认为,梁思成有效运用图文互释的多模态方法英译中国古建筑文化术语,成功地推动了中国古代建筑文化的国际传播。Taking the English monograph A Pictorial History of Chinese Architecture by traditional Chinese architecture scholar Liang Sicheng as a case study,this paper explores the image-text relations in the English translation of traditional Chinese architectural terminology based on Martinec&Salway’s image-text relations theory.Research results show that the image-text status relations in the English translation of traditional Chinese architectural terminology are independence,complement,image subordinate to text and text subordinate to image.Meanwhile,such logic-semantic relations exist between image and text as elaboration,extension and enhancement in the English translation therein.It can be argued that the multimodal method of effectively combining image and text employed by Liang Sicheng for the English translation of traditional Chinese architectural terminology successfully promoted the globalization of traditional Chinese architecture.
