摘　　要：本文钩沉19世纪的英美新教传教士伟烈亚力和卫三畏,将《梦溪笔谈》中的科学条目首译到英语世界。二人的中文版本之择看似随意,实则经过筛选和进行了一定的学术考究。受主观宗教身份和学识以及客观时代所影响,英译文的通俗性明显,体现在专业术语的科学性再现不够精准,对中国历史文化的感知存在舛误。而作为英美早期汉学史上举重轻重的人物,伟烈亚力和卫三畏对于中西科技文明交流互鉴的开拓性功绩毋庸置疑。This paper uncovers the 19th century protestant missionaries Alexander Wylie and Samuel W.Williams' s pioneering English renderings of science knowledge in Mengxi bitan.Superficially,they seemingly chose the Chinese version at will,but screened it out of academic consideration.Influenced by their religious identify and scholarly attainment as well as the historical background of the Qing times,the translations are common readers-oriented.Consequently,the reproduction of technicality of specialised terms is not so precise,and the rendering of Chinese history and culture is occasionally erroneous.Even so,as influential sinologists in the early history of Anglophone sinology,their groundbreaking contributions to the mutual communication between Chinese and Western civilization of science is undeniable.
