This paper takes Chen Wangdao’s Chinese translation of The Communist Manifesto in 1920 as the research object, and compares it with the English translation of The Communist Manifesto by Samuel in 1888 and the Japanese translation of The Communist Manifesto by Kotoku Akisui and Sakai in 1906 and finds that:it was a have-to-do choice in that specific historical context to translate lots of words and sentences from Japanese in the Chinese version, which nonetheless was the reason that Japanese version should be the source or main source text.China and Japan belonged to the Sinosphere and were involved in the tide of New Culture Movement,so it is reasonable that Chen adopted a large number of Japanese kanji words and new words. Many mistranslations and omissions in the Japanese version were corrected.A large part of punctuations were exactly the same as those in the English version. In conclusion,Chen translated Communist Manifesto on the basis of both the 1888 English version by Samuel Moore and the 1906 Japanese Version by Sakai Toshihiko and Shusui Kotoku.
