Fear memory is a powerful emotional response to certain environmental stimuli or experiences and serves as an effective psychological defense mechanism with significant physiological and social significance. However, aberrant expression of fear may contribute to post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental disorders.Sleep plays a crucial role in the processing of emotional memory, serving to consolidate positive emotional memory while suppressing negative emotions such as fear, and this process primarily occurs during rapid eye movement(REM)sleep.A growing body of literature suggests that REM sleep plays a crucial role in regulating the occurrence and development of fear memory, including its acquisition, consolidation, extinction, and generalization. This paper provides a comprehensive review of current research on the influence of REM sleep on fear memories and neural mechanisms, examining both normal physiological function and abnormal states of disease. The aim is to gain a better understanding of the role of REM sleep in fear memories, which can provide new perspectives and potential targets for future research.
