摘　　要：霍克思英译的《红楼梦》(前八十回)艺术成就很高,引发了很多研究。范圣宇的英文新著《译者的风月宝鉴:曹雪芹的〈红楼梦〉与霍克思的〈石头记〉》旨在考察霍译艺术胜境的生成基础(译者的汉学素养与版本校勘)、具体表现(翻译中的音、形与风格、玩趣与想象以及对西方文学经典的引用)和生成过程(基于翻译手稿等一手文献的翻译修改),挖掘霍译本身的艺术与审美价值。作者在书中论及或躬行的很多理念与方法颇有启发价值,如翻译生成研究、以经译经的理念、翻译游戏观等。作者长期沉浸在霍译《红楼梦》的艺术世界里,通过反复的译文细读以及对霍克思翻译手稿、翻译笔记等一手文献的通读,再加上校勘霍译《红楼梦》汉英对照版的经历,造就了一部不可多得的《红楼梦》翻译研究专著。David Hawkes’translation of Hong Lou Meng,namely,The Story of the Stone,has attracted wide academic attention due to its artistic appeal.Fan Shengyu’s English monograph The Translator’s Mirror for the Romantic:Cao Xueqin’s Dream and David Hawkes’Stone aims to explore the solid basis(like Hawkes’Chinese literacy and studies on different editions of the original novel),specific representations(like formal features,playfulness,imagination,allusion to western literary classics in his translation)and genetic progress(shown mainly by his constant revision based on his manuscripts)of the artistic achievements of Hawkes’translation.Some views shown and methods used in the monography are quite enlightening,such as genetic translation studies,translating a classic as a classic,translation as a game.Long immersed in the world of Hawke’translation of Hong Lou Meng,Fan has provided for its readers an excellent monograph featuring many academic insights and a large number of convincing examples.
