In Areopagitica,Milton famously insists that"books are not absolutely dead things, but do contain a potency of life in them to be as active as that soul was whose progeny they are";"they do preserve as in a vial the purest efficacy and extraction of that living intellct that bred them."Milton's vitalist-materialist conception of reading and its significance has generally gone unrecognized. The materially grounded phenomenology of reader reception posited in Areopagitica underlies Milton's presentation of the intimate psychological relation between authors and readers throughout his writings.Milton's conception of authorship and reading conforms to and is expressive of his vitalist monism in the specific case of the book as an instrumentality of authorial presence,a living, ultimately blood-based,technology.
